Equipment Setup

Everything you need to know about building a vinyl setup — from first turntable to audiophile-grade system.

How It All Connects

A vinyl setup is a chain of components. Each link matters. Understanding the signal path helps you make better buying decisions and troubleshoot problems.

Turntable

The source. Converts the physical groove into an electrical signal via a stylus and cartridge. The most critical component — cheap tables damage records.

💡 Never buy below ₹10,000 for a first turntable. The stylus touches your records directly.

Cartridge & Stylus

The cartridge holds the stylus (needle) and converts vibration into electrical voltage. Replaceable — upgrade the cartridge to upgrade your entire system affordably.

💡 Replace stylus every 500–1000 hours of play. A worn stylus damages your records.

Phono Preamp

The RIAA preamp boosts the tiny phono signal to line level and applies the RIAA equalisation curve. Many turntables have one built-in; a separate one sounds better.

💡 Some turntables have a built-in phono stage. A dedicated external one improves sound.

Amplifier / Receiver

Amplifies the line-level signal to drive your speakers. Integrated amplifiers combine preamp and power amp. Vintage receivers are popular for their warm sound.

💡 Look for an amplifier with a dedicated PHONO input if you want to skip a separate preamp.

Speakers

Convert the electrical signal to sound waves. The final link. Good speakers matter as much as the source. Bookshelf speakers are a great start; floorstanders scale up beautifully.

💡 Placement matters enormously. Toe them inward 15-20° and keep them away from walls.

"Vinyl is not a format. It is a relationship with music. Your setup is the quality of that relationship. Invest wisely — you will hear every rupee."

— Avijit Sarkar, Founder, Calcutta Records

I have been selling and collecting records since 2005. In that time I have helped thousands of people set up their first systems. The single most common mistake: buying a cheap turntable. A ₹3,000 turntable destroys your records. Spend ₹12,000+ on the deck and you will not regret it.
