Our Story

Born in the lanes of
Free School Street

Free School Street, Kolkata — where Calcutta Records was bornFree School Street, Kolkata

Calcutta Records was founded in 2020 by Avijit Sarkar, a Kolkata-based tech entrepreneur who grew up surrounded by the music of the city — the sounds of Rabindra Sangeet drifting from open windows, the crackle of old film soundtracks on family record players, and the treasure-hunt thrill of digging through dusty bins at Free School Street's second-hand shops.

Avijit noticed a gap in the market: vinyl lovers in India had no reliable, curated source with honest grading, real photos, and the trust that what they ordered was what they'd receive. He set out to build exactly that — a store where collectors and first-time buyers alike can shop with complete confidence.

What started as a small personal project grew into one of India's most trusted vinyl stores, shipping thousands of records to music lovers across every state in the country.

"Each record is a piece of history. My mission is to preserve the musical heritage of Kolkata — and of India — by making the best-quality vintage and new vinyl accessible to everyone who loves music."

Founder's Note

Avijit Sarkar, Founder of Calcutta Records

Hey there, I'm Avijit, the guy who started Calcutta Records. This whole journey began with a simple love for music, especially the kind that's pressed into vinyl. Remember those old records your parents might have tucked away somewhere? That's where my heart is.

Growing up in Calcutta, my father introduced me to Free School Street. There's something about dropping the needle on a record and hearing that first crackle that digital music just can't touch. So, I thought — why not bring that magic back?

We've dug through old collections in Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai, and beyond to bring you a mix of everything from The Beatles to R.D. Burman — because good music knows no boundaries. And it's not just about the music; it's about holding a piece of history in your hands.

If you love music, like I do — join our CRC family and let's get lost in a world of music.

"Reliving the old-world charm with vinyl records"

"Currently, vinyl records are getting revived globally. A lot of people are going back to vinyl records instead of listening to music on different applications — just to appreciate a finer quality of music. Vinyl records are a niche market that wants you to go through the hardship of listening to music, and if one can afford to bear that for the sake of quality music then nothing is like that."

Our Quality Promise

What makes every purchase
trustworthy

Graded Honestly

We use the internationally recognised Goldmine/Discogs grading scale. Every listing states the condition of both the media and the cover/sleeve. No inflated grades, ever.

Cleaned Before Listing

All used vinyl is cleaned to remove dust, debris, and surface contamination before it is offered for sale. Clean records play quieter and protect your stylus.

Real Photographs

Every item is individually photographed. You see the exact copy you will receive — not a generic stock image. What you see is what arrives at your door.

Audio Samples

Many vintage vinyl listings include a short audio playback sample so you can judge the actual pressing quality before purchasing.

Safe Packaging

Records are triple-packed in rigid cardboard mailers with bubble wrap and corner protection, labelled Fragile, to survive the Indian postal journey.

Our Mission

To preserve India's musical heritage — the golden era of Bollywood, the glory of Indian classical recordings, the cross-cultural jazz and rock scene — by making the finest vintage and new vinyl accessible to every music lover in India, with the transparency and trust that serious collectors demand.
